How did the Jets end up on the outside looking in?
This week we take a look at the Jets’ chances of winning the AFC East.
Here are the three teams on the bubble heading into the final week of the regular season: New England Patriots — The Patriots have had an excellent regular season, but a loss to the Titans on Sunday could end any momentum they had gained in recent weeks.
This was the first game of the season in which the Patriots were 0-5, which means they have only two losses in nine games.
Their best win of the year came in Week 7 against the Titans, a 28-23 win that saw Tom Brady throw for 536 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
Brady was named MVP.
The Patriots won’t be the only team to suffer a loss against Tennessee, but they are one of the favorites.
Atlanta Falcons — Atlanta is the only NFC team without a loss, but the Falcons are still very much in the thick of the playoff race.
They played their first game since Week 3 against the Buccaneers and lost 34-24, but it was the Falcons first victory since Week 7.
Atlanta had three wins in their last five games and could have a chance to close out the regular-season with a victory over the Colts.
They are also in the mix for the AFC South title, but could find themselves in the same position as the Jets if they lose Sunday.
Tennessee Titans — The Titans could get a bounce-back game in their final game before the All-Star break if they win Sunday’s game against the Colts, but that could be more than just a win for Tennessee.
The Titans are one game back of the Browns in the AFC wild-card race, and it’s a game the Titans could be in for in the next week or two.
Tennessee is also in position to be the defending NFC champion, so if they go to Indianapolis, they could end up as a playoff team in the conference, too.
Kansas City Chiefs — The Chiefs’ season could be over if they are swept out of the playoffs by the Colts on Sunday.
If that happens, they would have to play the Patriots on Jan. 15 to keep their playoff hopes alive.
If the Chiefs win that game, they will be back in the playoffs, but if the Patriots beat the Chiefs in Indianapolis, Kansas City could have to start playing them again in the second half of the schedule.
If they are unable to win on the road, Kansas State could end their playoff chances.
Jacksonville Jaguars — The Jaguars will be without the services of starting quarterback Blake Bortles if they fall to 1-3, but Blake Borskal is not the answer for Jacksonville.
The Jaguars are coming off a disappointing season in 2016, and they may be hoping that Bortls’ play against Tennessee on Sunday will help change that.
Jacksonville finished 8-8 in 2016 and had four losses in the first four games of the 2017 regular season.
Bortlis is coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, and he has thrown three touchdowns and two interceptions in that span.
The next best option for Bortlers would be a backup, but he might not be available to start Sunday.
New England Jets — The Jets are in a similar situation as the Chiefs and Jaguars.
The Jets have a strong chance of winning a playoff spot if they beat the Colts and the Patriots lose, but their chances of finishing with the best record in the NFC come Sunday would be slim.
New York will need a victory on the final play of the game if they want to clinch a spot in the postseason, but unless they win, it’s hard to imagine the Jets winning a game that could put them in a situation where they could finish in the bottom three.
Atlanta Seahawks — The Falcons are one win away from being in the wild-ball mix and are one week away from hosting a game against an AFC West opponent.
That game would have the Falcons looking to win their first NFC East game since they beat Miami in Week 13.
The Falcons have won their last two games against the Patriots, including a 24-24 win in Week 8.
But it was also a Week 10 game that the Falcons lost, a 23-17 loss at home against the Broncos.
The Broncos had a very respectable season in 2017, winning their final five games, but losing their next two games to finish with a 3-9 record.
The only thing holding the Falcons back is that they are coming up on a bye week and could be playing the Jets next week, a game they should be favored to win.
Kansas State Wildcats — The Wildcats were eliminated from the regular schedule by the Bears on Sunday, and that could end the Wildcats’ hopes of a return to the postseason.
Kansas’s biggest problem in 2017 was a porous secondary that allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete 69 percent of their passes, and their biggest problem was an offense
