Which are the best wood n taps in Melbourne?
With the heat coming down and temperatures dropping, many Melbourne homes are getting a lot more efficient, especially when it comes to water use.
But with so many taps, and the high price tag, what are some of the best options?
It’s a question that has long plagued the state.
When Melbourne first came into the state, the Victorian Water Utilities Commission ruled that the city was not using enough water for its population and needed to get more efficient.
This meant installing more water taps and more efficient boilers, which meant water used to heat homes had to be more efficient too.
“The average person uses approximately 80 per cent of the available water in a year,” said VicUW chief executive David Young.
“And in Melbourne, the average person spends more than 20 per cent on water.”
“It’s not a huge proportion of the total water used, but it is a significant proportion.”
VicUW’s own water use was well below the recommended 80 per-cent guideline, but the commission ruled that they were doing nothing to make water use better.
The state then set up a “water stewardship strategy” which aims to make the city’s water use “as efficient as possible”.
VICUW said it had also made changes to ensure people didn’t use water unnecessarily.
But there are still many people who don’t like the idea of using too much water, even though the city does have water conservation policies.
There are still issues around the amount of water used and how much is actually used.
And it’s not just the people who like the water, it’s the businesses who do too.
Melbourne has more than 30 water-intensive businesses, such as a water-based toilet and washing machine, and more than a dozen businesses that use recycled water.
“The amount of waste water used is a serious issue and it’s a serious concern for the environment,” said Young.
Victoria’s water management strategy The water management strategies VicUJ says are the most efficient and environmentally friendly way to manage water use are: water conservation (all) The strategy says Victoria needs to reduce the amount it uses from the amount people actually use to a sustainable amount by 2050.
It also says the state should reduce its use of water by 10 per cent per year over the next decade.
To achieve this, it says Victoria must reduce the consumption of water from agriculture, residential buildings and businesses to the sustainable level.
Water management (farm) This is the most environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to reduce water use for agriculture.
According to the plan, Victoria needs an 80 per one-tenth of a hectare of farmland in a growing season to have 50 per cent less water use compared to a less-efficient system.
That means water use will be cut by almost one-third, to 15 per cent.
At the same time, the plan says Victoria should use the same amount of groundwater as in a non-agricultural, non-commercial system to produce food, water, and other products.
Conservation (business) “It is not sustainable to use water as efficiently as we do and our economy needs to do something about that,” said Stephen Jones, VicUWA’s executive director of water.
“We want our businesses to use the water more effectively and minimise their water use to minimise pollution.”
“So we’re doing a lot of things that are really going to minimiser water use.”
The goal of the plan is to minimises water use by 15 per one hectare by 2050, but that doesn’t mean the amount used by Victoria is going to be reduced.
Vegas government says it’s committed to reducing water use and improving water conservation, but will not do so overnight.
Instead, the strategy calls for an increased investment in water conservation and conservation systems.
Australia is also making progress on water conservation with its Water Action Plan, which is set to be completed in 2018.
Young said the water plan is a good starting point to get the state up to speed on water use reduction.
“It gives us a framework to start to understand what our water needs are and where we’re going,” he said.
As for how much water people use, the VicUA’s Young said the state would like to see the total use in the community to be as low as possible, but he would like more people to get into the habit of using less water.
